Junie B. Jones and the Pleasure to Burn

Obviously, people burn books because they believe books have something in them that can corrupt minds and bodies, but is there another reason people burn books? Perhaps there is some enjoyment in watching the light of the flame or smelling the smoke as it dances around your nostrils. It’s almost as if burning books could become some addictive source of pleasure in the same way that binging your favorite show is or eating your favorite food. I guess that explains why Fahrenheit 451 starts with “It was a pleasure to burn.” But I think the taboo of it also contributes to the pleasure. Usually we are told not to burn so it is a cathartic release when we are finally told we can do so. I think that is the reason that I am excited to “burn” my own book. Stay tuned for total destruction.
